I’Naru is the Indigenous Taino word for Spirit of Women. Taino women were spiritual and connected to nature. The Taino are the Indigenous people of Puerto Rico, of which 61% of Puerto Ricans still share as a common ancestry, including myself. This piece was inspired by powerful Taino women who fought and survived Spanish colonization and Taino genocide. Thanks to my ancestors, here I am.
